Spilled Water on a Laptop? Steps Before an Insurance Assessment

Turn the laptop off

Unplug the charger and shut down the computer. Avoid turning it back on repeatedly to test it. Do not use a hair dryer or place it in rice. If the battery cannot be disconnected safely, leave the device off.

Document the incident

Record when the spill happened, what liquid was involved, and the symptoms you observed. Take photographs where safe and retain the purchase receipt.

Check with your insurer

Ask whether it needs an independent technician’s report, photographs, an itemized repair estimate, or replacement pricing. Coverage and documentation requirements vary by policy.

What technicians can assess

A technician may examine corrosion, residue, connectors and affected components, and determine which tests can be performed safely. Hidden damage may appear later, so an initial inspection cannot guarantee the full extent of damage.

Repair or replace?

Compare parts availability, labour and the device’s age. A technical estimate is not an insurance coverage decision.
